Hiring Your Wedding Photographer for Engagement Photos
The longer I photograph weddings the more I see the importance of having your wedding photographer also shoot your engagement portraits. I've not always been an advocate for having the same photographer for both but here are the biggest benefits you should consider:
- Consistency! You'll have the same editing style for your engagement photos as well as your wedding photos. By having the same photographer shoot both, your photos will look consistent and "match" when printing them for your home, gifts, etc.
- Practice makes perfect. Your engagement session serves many purposes, including a practice round for the wedding photos. You can't "mess up" at your engagement photos and it's a time to learn how your photographer poses, how they shoot, and helps you loosen up in front of the camera. When the wedding day arrives, you'll be ready with knowing exactly what poses you and your photographer love!
- Two words: STRESS RELIEF. If nothing else, you will feel so much better about your wedding photographer if you do engagement photos with them. You won't have to worry if they know what they're doing, if they're good to work with, what gear they use, or how they deliver images. You have enough to stress about when planning a wedding and your wedding photography shouldn't be one of them!
- The experience. You only get married once and the engagement is only one season in your life - make the most of it! You'll be so glad to have a fun "date" with your fiance as you get dressed up and have your photos taken in this important season. You'll have pretty memories and photos to look back on. If you go with a different photographer for your engagement session you may not get to experience all your wedding photographer has to offer, as couples are probably one of their specialties!
I hope this blog has shown the importance of hiring your wedding photographer for your engagement photos! You can also read what my past brides are saying below:
Will and I had never taken professional photos before and were both feeling nervous/awkward. You helped make the experience fun and made us feel comfortable in front of the camera. By the time our wedding day came around taking photos felt so much easier and natural... making for a perfect stress free day!
Tyler and I really liked knowing what to expect from you—how you interacted with us, ways you posed us, things like that. Knowing your style before the big day helped us feel much more relaxed and allowed us to enjoy every part of our very special day!

Wayne and I both were so uncomfortable when we first showed up for engagement pictures. By the time of our wedding Rachel had us both feeling so comfortable in front of the camera we no longer looked like fish out of water! I believe this is part of the reason our pictures turned out so perfect!
Cody and I tend to both be awkward in situations where all the attention is on us, so pictures made us nervous. You made us feel so relaxed and brought out the goofy side of our relationship I love! We couldn’t have asked for anything more, you went above and beyond!
